For 28 years, Yuba City’s Sikh Parade has been the showpiece of a Punjabi-American community that arrived mostly as farm laborers and become deeply woven into Mid-Valley society.
On Sunday, the latest celebration drew tens of thousands of spectators from the West Coast – while displaying a community as aware of its roots as ever.
A seven-hour pageant of parade floats showcased Sikh temples and groups from throughout the North State and as far away as Los Angeles, visitors drawn together in spirit as well as in person.
“We’re all like a family right now,” said Rajan Dosanjh, an Oakley boy among dozens of parade-goers crowding the Gridley-Live Oak Gurdwara’s float.
The Tierra Buena Sikh Temple, which organized the parade, estimated more than 75,000 spectators converged on Yuba City’s west side for the event. Hundreds joined the procession on truck-pulled floats, some with traditional bands along for the ride.
Sunday’s 41?2-mile parade followed morning prayer services at the temple and capped a three-day observance of Sikhs receiving the holy writings, the Granth Sahib, in 1708. The celebrations began Friday with prayer at Tierra Buena and continued Saturday with an educational open house featuring speakers on Sikh religion and culture.
The parade, called a Nagar Kirtan (town chanting), marks the anniversary of the Sikh people receiving their scriptures from Guru Gobind Singh, last of the faith’s 10 living gurus. Members of the Tierra Buena temple, the Mid-Valley’s first gurdwara, organized the first Sikh Parade in 1970, a year after the temple opened.
Despite Punjabi-Americans’ century-long presence in the North State, many of those on hand Sunday called the Sikh Parade and similar celebrations as essential as ever – particularly for a people whose distinctive turbans and beards often cause people to confuse them with other South Asian peoples and target them for harassment.
“I still feel like Sikhs are being mistaken for other Middle Eastern peoples,” said Harmail Singh, a Sacramento man who was watching the parade for the 16th straight year. “It’s kind of a shame for people who still don’t know who we are. This lets people know who we are… As a Sikh living in America, I want to see more things to present us to the world.”
The younger generation also left its imprint on the Sikh Parade, including college cultural clubs from Berkeley and Sacramento – and members of Yuba City High School’s own Punjabi American Club.
“It’s important to educate younger people about our history, our religion,” said Sanminder Singh, a Yuba City High senior who helped carry the club’s banner. “In school we’re mixed with other people, other faiths, and this is a way for (young Sikhs) to learn about themselves.”

ਜਗਤ ਤਾਰਿਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਮਹਾਂਰਾਜ਼ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਜਲੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਰਣ ਹਿਤ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਖਸਿਸ਼ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਹੋ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਰਸਨਾ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਿਆ ।ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਮੁੱਚੀ ਮਾਨਵਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਚੇਲਾ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਹ ਰੱਖੀ।ਇਸੇ ਹੀ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੱਖ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ, ਆਰਥਿਕ,ਰਾਜਨੀਤਕ ਅਤੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਖੋਂ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਮਾਜ ਨੂੰ ਹੋ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਕੁਰੀਤੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਹਿਤ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੱਚ ਦਾ ਮਾਰਗ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ।
ਪਹਿਲੇ ਚਾਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਨਵਤਾ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ,ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕੀਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਪੋਥੀ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜ਼ਵੇਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਪਾਸ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ 6 ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ,15 ਭਗਤਾਂ,11 ਭੱਟਾਂ ਅਤੇ 4 ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੂਲ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ 1604 ਈ: ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਪਾਦਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਸਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਪੋਥੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜਾਂ ਆਦਿ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।ਇਸ ਦੇ ਲਿਖਣ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕੀਤੀ।ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਮਹਾਂਰਾਜ਼ ਨੇ 102 ਸਾਲ ਬਾਦ ਇਸ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪ ਦੀ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਰਚਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਲਿਖਣ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਗ ਮਹਾਨ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਭਾਈ ਮਨੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਇਆ।ਗੁਰੂ ਸਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਲਿਖਣ ਢੰਗ ਜਾਂ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਵਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਕੋਈ ਤਬਦੀਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕੀਤੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਥਾਂ ਪੁਰ ਥਾਂ ਦਰਜ਼ ਕਰਕੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਵਾਧਾ ਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਜਿਤਨੇ ਭੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਮੰਨੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਧਰਮ ਬਾਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੀ ਹੋਈ ਪਰ ਇਕੋ ਇਕ ਵਾਹਦ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਹਨ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਪਾਦਨਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਆਪਨੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਕਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਦਿਤੀ ਸੀ।ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ,ਭਗਤਾਂ,ਭੱਟਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸ਼ੁਧ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਰਜ਼ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਤਬਦੀਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਇਲਾਹੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ। ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਕਥਨ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ:-
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਜਾਣੀਐ ,ਪੂਰੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਥਾਟ ਬਣਾਇਆ ।।
ਪੂਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਤੋਲੁ ਹੈ , ਘਟੈ ਨ ਵਧੈ ਘਟਾਇ ਵਧਾਇਆ ।
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਖੇ 1 ਸਤੰਬਰ,1604 (ਭਾਦੋਂ ਸੁਦੀ ਏਕਮ ਸੰਮਤ 1661) ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ:-
ਲਿਯ ਸੰਗ ਸੁ ਗ੍ਰੰਥਹਿ ਆਪਨ ਕੈ ।ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਮੈ ਥਿਰ ਥਾਪਨ ਕੈ।
ਹੁਇ ਪੂਜਾ ਸਦਾ ਇਸ ਥਾਨ ਬਿਖੈ।ਬਹੁਰੋ ਸਮੁਦਾਇ ਪਠੈ ਸੁ ਲਿਖੈ ।(ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਸੂਰਜ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ)
ਸਮੁੱਚੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਨੇ ਕਲਾਵੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੈਂਦਿਆਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸਿਰਫ ਆਪਨੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਲਕਿ ਚਾਰੇ ਵਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਬ ਸਾਂਝਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਏਕ ਪਿਤਾ ਏਕਸ ਕੇ ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿਤਾ।ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ,ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ,ਕਾਜ਼ੀਆਂ,ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਸਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਨੇ ਕਰਮ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਕੀਤਾ :-
ਕਾਦੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਮਲੁ ਖਾਇ ।।ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਆ ਘਾਇ।।
ਜੋਗੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਧੁ।।ਤੀਨੇ ਓਜਾੜੇ ਕਾ ਬੰਧੁ ।।
ਸੋ ਜੋਗੀ ਜੋ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ।।ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ।।
ਕਾਜੀ ਸੋ ਜੋ ਉਲਟੀ ਕਰੈ।।ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰੈ।।
ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਜੋ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ।।ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ।।
ਦਾਨਸਬੰਧੁ ਸੋਈ ਦਿਲਿ ਧੋਵੈ।।ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਸੋਈ ਮਲੁ ਖੋਵੈ।।
ਪੜਿਆ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ।।ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਕਾ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ।।(ਅੰਗ 662)
ਕਾਜ਼ੀ ਜੇ ਕਰ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਨੇਤਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਨਸਾਫ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਾਕਮ ਭੀ ਹੈ ,ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਲਾਲਚ ਵੱਸ ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲ ਕੇ ਵੱਡੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਬੇਇਨਸਾਫੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਕਾਜ਼ੀ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਅਖਾਉਤੀ ਨੀਚ ਕੁਲ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਫਰਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੇਸ਼ਕ ਕਿਤਨੇ ਵੀ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਹਾ ਲਵੇ ਸਭ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ।ਜਾਪਦਾ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਹੱਤਿਆ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ਼ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਧਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਉਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੰਨਣ ਹਿਤ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ:-
ਕਵਣੁ ਅਰੰਭ ਕਵਣੁ ਮਤਿ ਵੇਲਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਵਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਸਕਾ ਤੂੰ ਚੇਲਾ ।।
ਪਵਣ ਅਰੰਭ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਤਿ ਵੇਲਾ ਸ਼ਬਦੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਚੇਲਾ ।।
ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮ ਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਦੁਅਰਾ ਸਮੂੰਹ ਬੰਧਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਦਾ ਭੇਦ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ।ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ:-
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨੋ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਜੇਤਾ ਜਗਤੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ,
ਡਿਠੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ।।
ਪੰਜ਼ਵੇਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਸਤਿਕਾਰਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਅਮਲੀ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁੱਖ ਰੱਖਿਆ । ਜਦੋਂ ਹਜ਼ੂਰ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਜੀ ਇਹ ਬਚਨ ਕਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ:-
ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਾਣੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਾਰੇ,
ਗੁਰੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਕਹੈ ਸੇਵਕ ਜਨ ਮਾਨਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ।।
ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ ਕਰਵਾ ਕੇ ਮੱਥਾ ਟੇਕਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਲੰਘ ਦੇ ਉਤੇ ਬਿਰਾਜ਼ਮਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਉਪ੍ਰੰਤ ਆਪ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਚਾਦਰ ਵਿਛਾ ਕੇ ਅਰਾਮ ਕੀਤਾ।ਇਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਲੋਂ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਸੰਕੇਤ ਦਿਤਾ :-
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਤੇ ਯਾਤੇ ਹੈ ਦੀਰਘ , ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜਾਨ ਅਦਾਇਬ ਕਰੈ ਹੈਂ ।।

ਸਰਬੰਸ ਦਾਨੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਲਗੀਧਰ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸਚਖੰਡ ਪਿਆਨੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕੱਤਕ ਸੁਦੀ 2,1708 ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਭਾਈ ਦਯਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਕਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਲੈ ਆਵੋ।ਹੁਕਮ ਮੰਨ ਕੇ ਆਗਿਆ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਹਜ਼ੂਰ ਗੁਰਿਆਈ ਦੇ ਪੰਜ ਪੈਸੇ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਰੀਅਲ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਰਮਾਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਫਿਰ ਹੁਕਮ ਕੀਤਾ:-
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੇ ਬਚਨ ਸਿਉਂ , ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਚਲਾਇਉ ਪੰਥ ।।
ਸਭ ਸਿਖਨ ਕੋ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਾਨਿਉ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ।।
ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਭਾਈ ਦਯਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਅਸਾਨੂੰ ਕਿਸ ਦੇ ਲੜ ਲਾ ਚਲੇ ਹੋ ।ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਉੱਤਰ ਦਿਤਾ ਅੱਜ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਹਧਾਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਥਾ ਖਤਮ ਕਰ ਦਿਤੀ ਹੈ ।ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਕਾਲ ਲਈ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ- ਗੁਰੂ ਹੋਣਗੇ ।ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਬਚਨ ਕੀਤੇ :-
ਪੂਜਾ ਅਕਾਲ ਕੀ ,ਪਰਚਾ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕਾ,ਦੀਦਾਰ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਕਾ।

As much as it is a celebration of the Sikh faith and culture, the annual Sikh Parade is also an occasion to take a glimpse at the achievements of early Sikh pioneers.
They came to plow the lands of California, seize the American dream and lay the foundation for what is today one of most successful minority communities in the nation.
Now in its 28th year, the three-day gathering, which revolves around the recitation of the Sikh holy scriptures (the Guru Granth Sahib), is expected to draw upward of 70,000 people to the Yuba City Sikh Temple on Tierra Buena Road. As is customary, the temple will serve langar complimentary meals to all visitors.
To make that possible, volunteers have been busy for days with food preparation. Thousands of pounds of vegetables and thousands of gallons of tea will be consumed during the weekend.
Prayer services begin at 9 a.m. today and a fireworks show will fill the night sky above the temple (gurdwara) tonight.
Over the weekend, vendors will assemble in the temple parking lot to offer everything from clothing to paintings. More complimentary meals and snacks will be provided by vendors outdoors.
The weekend culminates Sunday with the four-and-a-half mile parade, or “Nagar Kirtan,” which translates as “town chanting.” The route goes south on Tierra Buena Road from the temple, east on Butte House Road, south on Civic Center Boulevard, west on Poole Boulevard, north on Tharp Road, west on to Butte House and north on Tierra Buena back to the temple.
The occasion marks the time when the Sikh people received the scriptures as the lasting word on Sikhism, from their 10th and final living guru, Guru Gobind Singh.
Siri Pritam Kaur Khalsa of Yuba City is one of an estimated 25 million Sikhs worldwide. Khalsa, who owns Sierra Injury and Sports Rehab Inc., was raised a Catholic but adopted the Sikh faith about 30 years ago.
“The Adi Granth (Granth Sahib, or scriptures) is a source of wisdom,” Khalsa said. “Bow before it and it will speak wisdom to you.”
On Saturday afternoon, the temple will host an open house and educational seminar.
Scheduled speakers include Harkirit Hansra, the 17-year-old author of “Liberty at Stake: Sikhs: The Most Visible, yet Misunderstood, Minority of America,” and Bruce La Brack, a professor of anthropology and international studies at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. La Brack is an expert on Sikhism and the evolution of Sikh culture in America.
“Sikhs are among the highest-achieving professionals among all the sub groups,” La Brack said in a telephone interview.
It helped that their arrival in the United States in the early 1900s predated that of significant numbers of other South Asians, though it is still recent in terms of other minority groups.
Unlike Hindus, who believed they’d lose their faith by crossing the ocean, Sikhs had no such fears, La Brack explained.
“Sikhism is quite different from other religions in South Asia – it is not fatalistic,” La Brack said. “It is very much about working hard, being self-sufficient; there are very few restrictions.”
That is why large numbers of Sikhs have been a mainstay in the Indian army, dating back to the British rule of India and why they settled in foreign lands where they were stationed, including Kenya, the Fiji islands and Canada.
And though a Sikh may have taken up arms as a soldier, he never lost his agricultural roots, La Brack said.
“They looked around at Canada, with all of its trees and agriculture, and thought this looks like a cool place,” La Brack said.
Others followed. But some men found Canada too cold and eventually made their way down to California, including the Yuba-Sutter area. And when Canada clamped down with immigration laws, Sikhs landed directly in San Francisco.
Men borrowed money and families mortgaged their land to pay for the passage. Some worked in the fields, others on railroad construction and still others in the lumber mills.
It helped, too, that the relatively mild climate and warm summers reminded the men of home.
It was a lonely existence as xenophobic immigration laws made it impossible for South Asians to send home for wives or other family members.
So, some Sikh men married Mexican women, whose skin tone most closely resembled their mates’.
“The community was very strong but religion was on a very individual level,” La Brack said. “There were few gurdwaras and no granthis; most of the people weren’t literate in the language of the Granth (holy scriptures.)”
Despite the limitations, the Stockton Gurdwara Sahib opened in 1912, the first in the United States.
Passage of the Immigration Act in 1965 opened the way for more Asians, including Sikhs, to come to the United States.
Finally, the growing Sikh population here in the Yuba-Sutter area opened its first gurdwara in the area, the site of this weekend’s festivities, in 1969.
